Installing Mains Electric Hook-Up - Self built DIY VW T5 camper conversion

When you connect to a campsite electric hook-up point you are able to receive an electricity supply as you would at home. The first is to use a leisure battery, which is like a car battery and provides a 12V supply, and the second is an electric hook-up. Most commercial campsites in the UK will offer electric hook-ups on some or all of their pitches, we have 46 here at the Red Shoot Camping Park.

The maximum permitted distance between socket outlet and any point on the caravan pitch is 20 metres. The hook up lead should be 25 metres (+/- 2 metres) of. Tripping the electrical supply can make you unpopular on site. Make no mistake about it, electricity can be dangerous, especially in the damp conditions of a tent or in the open air so safety is paramount. Even a 12V battery can give you a nasty shock if used incorrectly.

Used in the right way however, you can benefit from mains electricity and, if you take the right precautions, you can do it safely. However, they can draw more power from the leisure battery that the more common gas-fired units.

Increasingly, the same is true of motorhomes. These last far longer than ordinary filament bulbs and, importantly, use a fraction of the energy, thus helping to preserve battery power. Specialist sellers are online and at motorhome shows throughout the year. Another worthwhile upgrade is a solar panel.

The latest types the original, rigid-type, have bulky alloy frames are very thin and semi-flexible so they can lie flat on curved roofs.

Some are even self-adhesive, making installation even easier. Far better is the pure sine wave version, which mimics mains far more accurately and runs just about all V equipment safely.


But beware, as the amount of power drawn from your leisure battery can be huge and flatten batteries very quickly. The average low-wattage kettle is rated at 1,W and this equates to more than 80A of current draw enough to empty an average-sized Ah leisure battery in less than one hour.

Given the above, adding a second leisure battery or a larger-capacity one can be both worthwhile and relatively easy if you have the space. The thing to check here is fitness for purpose and quality.

In simple terms, there are two types: the average car battery designed to give lots of power for a short length of time when starting the engine for instance. The best way to avoid a problem is to plan ahead and familiarise yourself with the electrical needs of all the appliances you may use in your motorhome. Another couple of units you may see are milliamperes mA and kilowatts KW.

Currents of less than 1A are usually expressed in mA. There are mA in 1A so mA is actually half an amp. Similarly, a kilowatt is merely watts.

However, also bear in mind that many devices demand a higher current for a split second when they start up. Motors such as those in fan heaters need a starting surge of nearly twice their usual current, while fluorescent lights use four or five times their usual current rating. Problems can be avoided by switching on the highest surging product s first, while the current draw is still low.

Never use a domestic extension lead outside invest in an adapter that allows the domestic socket to be joined to your hook-up lead. If you plug into the hook-up first, the semi-exposed other end will be live.

If it trips, the lead is at fault If none of these cause problems, the fault must lie with any appliances that were plugged in at the time of the electrical trip, so avoid using them until they have been professionally checked.
